The University of Arkansas has increased its recruiting territory far past the Natural State's borders in recent years, but that doesn't mean every player out of state knows what the Razorback tradition is all about. It goes without saying that Arkansas must continue to work hard, and Marcus Lucas is a prime example.
Lucas may live just 250 miles from Fayetteville, but the Liberty, Mo., wide receiver says he knows very little about the University of Arkansas.
"I don't know much about them at all," he said said. "My coach knows more about them than I do."
In fact, the 6-4, 175 pound junior says the most contact he has had with Arkansas is in the form of letters.
"They're constantly sending me mail," he said. "But I've yet to contact the head coach from there."
Lucas listed Missouri, Oklahoma, and Stanford as his top three schools. The Rivals.com rated four-star has seven offers, including one from Arkansas. Missouri fans have said they believe he is a lock for the Tigers, but Lucas said that is not the case.
"Not necessarily," Lucas said. "I'm keeping my options open to see what will be best for me, not everyone else."
Not being a lock for his home state school leaves a lot of room for other schools to come in, and Lucas said he is open to Arkansas. He said he would be more interested if Arkansas were to contact him on a more personal level.
"Yes, but I'm not sure how they feel," he said. "And I'm not too sure how they run things down there."
Lucas said there are certain things he looks for in a school, and he is open to any school that offers him those opportunities.
"I'm open to anything that I can get," he said. "I'm just trying to find the best education, football program, and community combination."
While Lucas may be a tough catch - no pun intended - the Missouri wide receiver is not ruling Arkansas out.
"I wouldn't count anyone out," Lucas said.
