LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Lonoke County prosecutor's office says lawyers for the state will ask the state Supreme Court to reconsider its decision overturning the corruption conviction of former Lonoke police chief Ronald Jay Campbell.
A news release Tuesday from Prosecutor Will Feland said the state attorney general's office would file a petition with the high court seeking a rehearing of the case.
In Thursday's ruling, the Supreme Court said prosecutors failed to present substantial evidence to support Campbell's conviction, and sent the case back to Lonoke County Circuit Court. Campbell was sentenced to 40 years in prison after being convicted on 23 counts including masterminding a criminal enterprise and a series of underlying crimes ranging from obtaining drugs by fraud to hindering prosecution.
