LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A controversial proposal to charge tuition at a subsidized federal college for American Indians continues to stir unrest at Haskell Indian Nations University.

Haskell president Linda Sue Warner says the money is needed to improve academic programs, shore up the campus computer network and replace old buildings and aging classrooms. Students currently pay fees of $215 each semester.

Warner was recently sent to a two-year federal college for American Indians in New Mexico to help the school gain accreditation. Officials with the federal Department of the Interior say that Warner will return to Haskell in January.
