OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gov. Brad Henry is proclaiming 2010 as the Year of the Vietnam Veteran.
Oklahomans will observe Veterans Day on Wednesday and Henry says it is important to honor the sacrifices made by all veterans.
But the governor says it's appropriate to give special recognition to the men and women who served with distinction and valor in Vietnam but were denied such praise when they returned.
Community leaders and various military organizations are planning events during the Fourth of July weekend in 2010 to honor Oklahomans who served in the Vietnam War. Celebrations will occur in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Norman.
Oklahoma's adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Myles Deering, says the thousands of American men and women who served in Vietnam never received praise they so richly deserved.
