ALTUS, Okla. (AP) — A preliminary investigative report says a pilot might have attempted an aerial maneuver before a plane crash at Quartz Mountain Regional Airport that killed two people.
The National Transportation Safety Board report says the Skybolt airplane took off on the morning of Nov. 8 and climbed 50 to 75 feet. The report says 38-year-old pilot Robert Munson banked the plane hard to the right and executed a wingover, and the plane spiraled to the ground.
The Merriam-Webster online dictionary defines a wingover as a maneuver in which a plane is put into a climbing turn until nearly stalled. Then the nose is allowed to fall while the turn is continued until normal flight is attained in the opposite direction.
Munson and 17-year-old Zachary Cook died in the crash.
