FORT RILEY, Kan. (AP) — A 1st Infantry Division command sergeant major and his family have given a new meaning to the division's motto of "Big Red One."
Kevin Nolan and his family have been named "2009 Army Family of the Year" by the National Military Family Association. The Nolans — Kevin, Edith, Stephen and Shannon — were named along with families from the other service branches. One of the seven families will be chosen as national military family of the year.
Nolan currently serves with the division's headquarters battalion. He was nominated by his former military police unit.
The family was honored for its community involvement, including church, Scouting and school activities.
