LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Pay raises for more than 3,300 employees at the UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock are being canceled or rescinded.

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences chancellor Dr. Daniel Rahn says officials are looking to cut expenses because of budget shortfalls after the opening of a new 10-story hospital. Rahn says the issue is that growth is not matching what was projected.

Employees get a raise each year on the anniversary of their hiring. Those who received raises already had their pay rate returned to what it was before July 1 and pay for those due raises are frozen at their current salary.

UAMS officials estimate the pay freeze will save the hospital $3 million for the fiscal year.

The hospital has 10,678 employees.
