CANFIELD, Ark. (AP) — Authorities in Lafayette County have recovered the body of a woman whose friend told police she vanished as they rode air mattresses over the Lake Erling spillway at dusk.
Sheriff's deputies identified the victim as 30-year-old Devan LeAnn Burge of Shongaloo in nearby Webster Parish, La. Her body was found Wednesday morning in a tangle of trees about 70 yards below the spillway. Burge disappeared at about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Investigators said Burge was with a male friend, who said they were trying to ride surging water at the spillway. Arkansas has had bouts of heavy rain in recent days.
Lafayette County sheriff's deputies and state police are investigating the friend's account of what happened.
