MAYFLOWER, Ark. (AP) — A felony charge has been filed against former Mayflower police chief Richard Shaw that accuses him of helping a man with a criminal record buy emergency blue lights.

Prosecutor Marcus Vaden said in a news release Friday that it was inconceivable that any police officer would help a felon take on the appearance of a law enforcement officer.

Shaw, 39, resigned Dec. 14 amid an investigation into how John Brinkley of North Little Rock was able to assume the role of a police officer.

Brinkley, 33, was arrested Nov. 21 and charged with impersonating a police officer. An arrest report said Brinkley was observed by a Faulkner County sheriff's deputy at a traffic stop, driving his personal vehicle that displayed flashing blue lights. The report said Brinkley wore a police duty belt with a Glock handgun.

In 2007, Brinkley had pleaded guilty to a felony hot-check charge. He also awaits trial on charges of theft and fraudulent use of a credit card.
