Saturday marks the first day of modern gun hunting in Arkansas.

Hunters have been able to hunt with a bow since October 1st, 6 weeks before the start of modern gun.

Richard Craft with Gellco Outdoors says his archery sales have been very good this year. "With the cooler weather that we had in the month of October lends itself to a lot of the hunters getting out and participating in archery season," he said.

Craft says his gun sales are not as high as archery, due largely in part to the warm weather.

He says he's looking forward to the cooler temperatures next week.

The warmth is affecting not only his gun sales, but also his clothing and accessory sales.

Justin Gipson got a deer on the first day of modern gun season.

He says the warmer temperatures mean fewer opportunities to get a deer. "Yeah we'd actually only seen a couple of does the whole time. This buck wasn't really chasing any does. He was just walking off by himself when we saw him. It's definitely warm. There wasn't a whole lot of deer movement," said Gipson.

And craft says you don't have to kill a deer to enjoy a day hunting.

He says it's all about perspective. "It's relaxing and you're out there in nature and you see the woods come alive every morning and you get to see God's creation out there. The white tailed deer is one of the wiliest games there is out there to harvest," Craft said. Hunters are also using a new method of checking in deer this year.

It's called Telecheck and now hunters can check their deer in through the phone or online.

Hunters have 24 hours to check their game. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is also waiting on approval for an iPhone app that will allow you to check your deer from your phone.
