Rogers Mayor Steve Womack will officially announce his candidacy for Congress this week. this is steve womack's 12th year as mayor of rogers. His long run in office may make you wonder. Why run for Congress now? And what about the city he's led for so long?

"There are a lot of reasons I'm running for Congress, but notably it's because I love my country and I think it's important that we keep a conservative voice in Washington," said Womack.

Womack says his experience as a Colonel in the military and as the Mayor of Rogers make him the man for the job.

But what will happen to Rogers if Womack wins? He says the work he's already done and leadership team he has in place will keep the city from missing a beat.

"I am at peace knowing that the higher calling of the federal elected office, if it comes to pass, where I am elected to Congress, that the city of Rogers is going to be just fine."

Womack's wife didn't want him running for office until she overheard a conversation between Womack and her mother.

"She heard the passion in my voice, the concern I have for my country, and she told me later that evening, she says, you know what, you're the right fit. You're the right person at the right time."

The top issues on Womack's agenda include jobs, the rising deficit, healthcare, and illegal immigration.

Republican opponent and Springdale business owner Bernie Skoch had this response to Womack's announcement.

"I will tell you that the timing of the announcement...is interesting, because if there's a moral conviction that I want to go do the right thing and that I offer the people an alternative, I think that conviction doesn't need to wait on the departure of someone else from the race," said Skoch.

The rising deficit and illegal immigration are also priorities for Skoch. Problems he says can't be solved by someone more concerned with their political career.

"What we want to offer the voters of the 3rd district is the opportunity to go into the ballot box and not chose a career politician," said Skoch.

No matter what their reasons for running, both candidates very passionate about the issues they believe matter to Arkansans.

Womack planned to make his official announcement tomorrow, but because of the threat of winter weather, they have postponed the announcement until sometime later in the week.
