Mansfield's new Interim Superintendent has experience with handling schools in fiscal distress, according to those who have worked with him before.

The school board elected Robert Evans last night to fill the position of Jim Hattabaugh, who was suspended without explanation last week. Evans served as a superintendent for 27 years, including 10 years at Greenwood High School, before retiring in 1997.

He then served off and on as an interim superintendent at four school districts, including Lakeside Schools in Hot Springs, which was in fiscal distress, much like Mansfield is now.

"By the end of the year, we had a balance of close to half-a-million dollars, which for where we were that was a very significant turnaround, said Jan White with the Lakeside School District. "He didn't make any budget cuts, he just made us be very careful about our spending habits."

This year Mansfield Schools switched to four day weeks to help cope with budget problems.
