When news of the earthquake hit, many local groups kicked into action. Last Friday night Fort Smith attorney Joey McCutchen and Noah Steffy were trying to find ways to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

They decided to set up a U-Haul to collect supplies and food.

On Tuesday they'll drive the truck to Lake Charles, Louisiana to get the supplies on a boat to Haiti. "Noah Steffy and I felt we needed to apply the golden rule. If we were in that situation, we would hope that someone would lend a hand to us," said McCutchen.

But for Steffy, the earthquake hit close to home.

He had been to Haiti with an organization called Friend Ships in 2006.

He's hoping to get on the boat with the supplies that have been donated and get back to Haiti. "I've got a couple friends on the ground that I haven't heard from and I just want to make sure they're okay and give them a big hug and let people know there are people in this world that give a flip about them and are doing something about it instead of just talking about it," said Steffy.

But this isn't the only group in Fort Smith trying to help.

New Life Church is accepting donations of medications and medical supplies.

Everyone agrees now is the time to take action.

Steffy says he knew from the instant he heard about the earthquake, he couldn't sit back and do nothing. "It's like being a parent. Unless you've been there and have done this kind of work and have friends that are affected by something you see on tv, you never understand," he said.

McCutchen and Steffy say they will even come pick up any donations.

They will be accepting donations through Monday night.
