The businesses we spoke to in downtown Fort Smith were seeing a great turnout. And that's keeping them encouraged about the upcoming holiday season.

It may be 75 degrees outside, but that doesn't mean Fort Smith shoppers aren't getting into the holiday spirit.

Dozens of businesses participated in the holiday open house this weekend, where they displayed new products for the holiday season, hoping to attract early Christmas shoppers.

But if the economy is in a recession, retailers in downtown Fort Smith are not feeling the pinch this year. "We do not feel the recession in Fort Smith. Downtown Fort Smith, Creative Kitchen is not feeling the recession. We're really not. We're very thankful," said Jennifer Taylor.

Lauren Lance at Emi-Lee's Consignment says they're taking the big crowds as a sign this will be a good holiday season for her business. "We usually open at 10. This morning we opened at 9:30 and people were crowding the door. We've been busy all day long. It's been hectic, but good," said Lance.

Jennifer Taylor at the Creative Kitchen says they believe that it's actually the down economy that is helping her business thrive this holiday season.

"People are entertaining in their homes more instead of going out and that is a way to save money. So we are here to help them entertain in their homes, so I think that has helped also," said Taylor. A lot of business owners told 5News that people seemed to be ready to get into the holiday mindset, now we're just waiting on the weather to cool down.
