Police in Tucumcari, New Mexico have the suspect, Tristan J. Honey in custody.

Police say he walked into a port of entry station in San Jon, New Mexico around 6:30 this evening and turned himself in.

Tucumcari is along Interstate 40 on the Texas and New Mexico border.

"As far as we know he just walked into the station, a police station for lack of a better word, and told them that he was involved in an incident last night and he believed he had shot a police officer. As far as we know at this point, he just walked in and just on his own free will volunteered this information," said Jarrad Copeland with Fort Smith Police.

Honey told New Mexico State Police that his truck had broken down.

A warrant will be issued for him by the Sebastian County Judge for attempted capital murder.

They will then begin the extradition process to bring him back to Arkansas.

Honey is suspected of shooting Fort Smith police officer Barney Parsons after Parsons stopped him for running a stop sign.

The suspect jumped out of the vehicle and immediately opened fire on Parsons.

Parsons was shot twice in the leg, once in the foot, and once in the chest, but he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

He is in stable condition at Sparks Regional Medical Center.

Parsons was able to return fire, but the suspect was not injured. Police believe there were people in the vehicle with Honey when the shooting happened.

They are hoping those people come forward soon

If they don't, they could face charges of accessory to attempted capital murder.

Police hope to have Honey in Fort Smith by the end of the week.
