An early afternoon fire in Lavaca left one family facing $20,000 worth of damage.

Fortunately nobody was hurt in the blaze.

Lavaca Fire Chief Steve Helms says the fire started in the carport near some mattresses.

He says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In addition to the Lavaca Volunteer Fire Department, the Big Creek Volunteer Fire Department also responded. The family was all out of the house by the time fire fighters arrived.

Chief Helms says most of the damage occurred from smoke. "We got the call. The pagers went off and we responded here to a structure fire here on Connie Lane. Once we arrived the fire was coming through the roof. We pulled a tack hose off and extinguished the flames as quickly as possible," said Helms.
