Pregnant Woman Allegedly Stabbed by Ex-boyfriend was also Shot by Police
Autopsy results show the pregnant woman allegedly murdered by her ex-boyfriend in Fayetteville Friday, was also shot by police.

Police were called to the apartment complex on Leverette Avenue around 10:30 p.m., after 26-year-old Jill Ulmer called 9-1-1. Her ex-boyfriend, 41-year-old Ricky Ray Anderson, who was under a protection order, was walking around the complex.

When police arrived, Anderson had already broken into the apartment. Police could not get through the door, so they broke a window and witnessed Anderson stabbing Ulmer, that's when the two officers drew their guns and fired. In a press release police said, "It was determined a shot fired by the responding officers struck Ms. Ulmer as she was viciously and repeatedly stabbed by the suspectÂ…..while the stab wounds were determined to have been fatal, so too was the gunshot wound."

Anderson has been arrested on the preliminary charge of second degree murder. This is the third time he's been arrested this month. On June 7 he was arrested for criminal mischief, regarding an incident at Ulmer's apartment, where he destroyed a number of her belongings. The next day Ulmer filed for a protection order. Anderson was released on June 18, the next day he violated the protection order and was arrested again, then released on bond.

"You can have a protection order but that doesn't mean you have round the clock protection by police," said Sgt. Bill Phelan.

Ulmer was 10 weeks pregnant and Anderson was believed to be the father. Homicide is the number one cause of death to pregnant women in the United States.

As for the officers involved in the shooting, they have been placed on administrative leave, which is normal procedure.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office has been asked to conduct an independent investigation.

Here is the press release from the Fayetteville Police Department:

RE: FAYETTEVILLE POLICE RECEIVE PRELIMINARY INFORMATION

Fayetteville Police Chief Greg Tabor today released more information regarding the ongoing investigation into the death of Jill Ulmer.

Preliminary information from the State Medical Examiner's Office indicates cause of death was due to multiple stab wounds and a gunshot. It was determined a shot fired by the responding officers struck Ms. Ulmer as she was viciously and repeatedly stabbed by the suspect. The information released by the Medical Examiner's Office indicates that while the multiple stab wounds were determined to have been fatal, so too was the gunshot wound. The Medical Examiner's Officer also confirmed Ms. Ulmer was pregnant at the time of her death. The Fayetteville Police Department is saddened by the tragic death of Ms. Ulmer. It is unfortunate our efforts to prevent her murder were unsuccessful. Per police department policy, the responding Fayetteville Police Officers have been placed on administrative leave pending results of an internal investigation.

At the request of Chief Tabor the Washington County Sheriff's Office has been asked to conduct an independent investigation into the actions of the police officers. It's been the practice of the Fayetteville Police Department to ask for an independent investigation of deadly force incidents.

Ricky Ray Anderson is still being held at the Washington County Detention Center pending the filing of formal charges.
