Halloween spending is down 15 percent this year compared to last, according to the National Retail Federation, so costume stores in Northwest Arkansas are pulling out all the stops to keep customers from being scared away.
"I'm on a budget so it's not feasible for me to spend a lot of money on Halloween," said Lisa Alvarado Majors. Majors was one of many people browsing through the masks and decorations at Halloween Express in Fayetteville Tuesday.
"Of course we see people come in asking what's on sale, people are conscious but they are still buying," said manager Ashley Gray.
In order to attract customers Halloween Express has done everything from putting up huge banners, to having a clown wave next to the highway, to slashing prices. "We've put a little bit of everything on 50 percent off, costumes, decorations, to help the customers out," said Gray.
However, there are other options if you don't feeling like spending a lot of money. Some people just go to stores to gain ideas and then go back and create their own, while others just think about recycling. "I like my costume last year, people liked it, I thought it was funny, why not do it again," said Carey Fowler.
However, when it comes to spending it's really on a case by case basis. Tracy Wright said he wouldn't let his children walk into the Halloween Express last year, yet this year they are looking at top of the line masks.
"The boat business is getting better, I have a little extra money to spend," said Wright.
