A deadly car crash occurred in Fayetteville on Thursday night involving a University of Arkansas law student.

Justin Ferdinand, 24, was driving on Mount Comfort Road, when he lost control near Stephens Avenue. His PT Cruiser went into a ditch, breaking a telephone pole in half. The force was so great that the car proceeded to flip across Stephens Avenue and land upside down in a resident's front yard.

"I heard a tremendous explosion, and a crash, I knew it was a car," said Brenten Stevens, who lives on Stephens Avenue. He was one of the first people to arrive on scene.

"When I got down the hill I saw the car upside down flipped over," said Stevens. Being a retired member of the military, his first instinct was to save the driver.

"I got on my hands and knees and climbed through the front window, I looked at the gentleman and could tell it wasn't good," said Stevens. "I felt his artery; he was gone, definitely passed instantly."

According to the police report, Ferdinand had gone out to watch the baseball playoff game with a friend. He was returning when the crash occurred. Police are awaiting toxicology results to see if alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

The speed limit on Mount Comfort Road is 25 miles per hour, but Stevens thinks Ferdinand had to be going much faster to create such a horrific crash. "You're looking at someone doing at least 60 to 70 miles per hour at least, in order to snap that pole, that's a major pole," said Stevens.

Ferdinand was scheduled to graduate from law school this December. The U of A Law School honored him by placing flowers and a picture of Ferdinand in their lobby.

"He was really smart, talented, real nice guy, always had something nice to say to everybody, and really friendly," said Jordan Voor, who went to school with Ferdinand. "He'll be missed."
