A Washington County man is behind bars, for allegedly shooting a woman in the back, through the front door of her home.

Fayetteville Police say a late-night dispute led to the shooting. Police arrived 5700 West Fountain Street around 11:30 Tuesday night, and found a woman had been shot in the back, right through her front door. The victim, 29-year-old Julie Bolton, says she was leaning on the door when she heard a pop and felt pain in her back.

Neighbor Anastasia Thyroff says she heard the gun go off. "I was just studying in my bedroom last night, and I heard a shot."

According to police, 21-year-old Charles Thomas Nation, also known as "Bra," went to Willie and Julie Bolton's home at 5700 West Fountain near midnight, demanding $120. Sergeant Bill Phelan with the Fayetteville Police says: "apparently some money was given to the victims to obtain something for the suspect, and when he did not receive his merchandise, he went back to collect his money. And when he didn't receive all the money, the victim slammed the door on him, and he fired one shot through the door, striking the female."

Thyroff says she was shocked to hear what happened. "Oh no! It looks and always feels really safe, so it really took us for surprise." Phelan says it's not the first time they have been called to the street. "Several years ago there was a homicide on this street." But he says this incident is different. "This is not typical, where somebody goes to somebody else's house and shoots through a door. He supposedly stated that his intent was not to shoot anybody but just to intimidate and scare. But the problem with that is that you're shooting through a closed door and you don't know who is on the other side of that door, and there was a 5-year-old in the residence that did witness all this and was in close proximity of the shooting."

Although police arrested Nation on Crossover Road in Fayetteville a short time later, neighbors like Thyroff say they still don't feel safe. "It makes me a little nervous that it's happening in our neighborhood, but I don't know what you can do about it. I'm not going to be doing my runs in this neighborhood anymore! That's for sure!"

Police say right now Nation is inside the Washington County Detention Center. They say he faces multiple charges, including attempted murder in the second degree, aggravated assault, felon in possession of a firearm, and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Wednesday, Fayetteville Police obtained a warrant to search Nation's home at 4049 Johnette, and say they found a 9mm Keltec handgun inside.

Police say Julie Bolton is in stable condition after surgery.
