Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a ditch.

The man was 71-year-old Billy Cameron of Fort Smith.

Police say he just arrived in town last night to visit family.

The body was found in this ditch right out front of Breeden Dodge on Highway 71.

Witnesses tell 5 News a hitch-hiker spotted the body in the ditch and notified police.

There was a wheelchair lying on top of the man.

Police aren't sure if the man was hit by a car or fell into the ditch, but they do say it appears he drowned in the shallow water.

Investigators say he may have been in the ditch for more than a day.

Breeden Dodge employees say they see into the ditch everyday and the body was not there on Wednesday.

Right now investigators are trying to figure out exactly what happened.

"Little bit after 5 this afternoon, a pedestrian walking on 71 spotted a body and a wheelchair in the drainage ditch over here and called us and we came out to investigate. We really don't know much more than that. He appears to be an elderly white male. Appears he was in a wheelchair and somehow wound up in the ditch and apparently drowned," said Sgt. Anthony Bowers with the Fort Smith Police. His body has been sent to the medical examiner to determine a cause of death.
